The family-friendly event usually draws around 400 people, many in cowboy hats, bandanas and other Western garb, for an outdoor cookout, music, dancing and other activities for pseudo-Texans young and old. The event is open to the community, YMCA members and nonmembers alike.

Thrift shop turns clothes into scholarship for two

North Andover High School graduates Stephanie Willis and Jennifer Zeheb have received the North Andover Thrift Shop's 2008 scholarships.
These scholarships are given to graduating seniors who live in North Andover to recognize cumulative outstanding volunteer contributions to the community, and for academic excellence. Each student received $1,000.

As of now I can officially say that I have seen each eco-zone of Ecuador: the coast, Andes, the Amazon, and my new favorite, the Galapagos Islands!
My trip to the islands concluded my series of trips with the other exchange students throughout the country. We stayed on the Island of Santa Cruz in a hotel that was nothing special, but we didn't spend much time there anyway. Most people go to Galapagos on a cruise ship to see all of the islands, but we really only got to see Santa Cruz. This island is the most populated out of the 13 large islands, six small islands and 42 islets. In all, there is a population of 18,000.

On June 17, a $10 raffle ticket could win you a Wii.
North Andover United, a citizens group that grew out of last year's campaign for a budget override, donated two Nintendo Wii video game systems to the North Andover Senior Center. One will be raffled in a drawing to raise money for the center's Capital Improvement Fund. The other Wii unit will remain at the senior center for local seniors to use once the renovations are complete.

Parson Barnard House begins its summer season on Sunday, May 18. The historical home at 179 Osgood St., North Andover, will be open every Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for 65 and older, and $2 for children ages 7 through 16. Historical society members are admitted free.

Team suffers first loss in three years

The seventh grade North Andover Merrimack Valley Travel Team ended its season with a loss to the Stoughton 57-42 in the first Mass State Travel Team Basketball Tournament, held at Gordon College.
It was the first time in 75 games played that the team did not come out on top.

A warning about ticks and Lyme disease: As the seasons change, our concerns go from slipping on an icy walkway to spending warm summer days working in our yard, lounging at local parks or beaches and protecting ourselves against Lyme disease. Lyme disease is spread by the bite of an infected deer tick. The tick usually must be attached to a person for least 24 hours before it can spread the germ. Lyme disease can occur during any time of year.

An estimated 1,000 mourners packed St. Michael Church on Saturday, April 26, for the funeral of 17-year-old Alex Farese.
The high school senior died April 21, a week after collapsing on the high school track. Doctors believe his heart stopped because of a defect no one knew he had, according to the family.

North Andover teen Paul DiBlasi was recently elected governor of Massachusetts, but he won't be working on his Mitt Romney hairdo or installing new drapes in his Statehouse office anytime soon.
DiBlasi is governor-elect of the YMCA's Youth and Government program, a mock-government club in which high-schoolers write bills, lobby, and participate in what goes on every day at the Statehouse.

Transportation is the No. 1 unmet need for elders in North Andover. The North Andover Senior Center is working to help make a difference in the lives of seniors in the community.
The Supper Club is a group of seniors who go out to dinner at different area restaurants once a month. The cost of dinner, tax, and gratuity is usually between $15.99 and $21, depending on the restaurant that is chosen. An additional $2 is charged for round-trip transportation.
