Thrift shop turns clothes into scholarship for two

North Andover High School graduates Stephanie Willis and Jennifer Zeheb have received the North Andover Thrift Shop's 2008 scholarships.

These scholarships are given to graduating seniors who live in North Andover to recognize cumulative outstanding volunteer contributions to the community, and for academic excellence. Each student received $1,000.

Willis plans to attend the University of San Francisco and major in Spanish. Her favorite volunteer experience was the Knights Mission book drive in Lawrence.

Zeheb plans to attend Boston University and major in biology. Her favorite volunteer experiences were working with "Ladder to Language" and the English as a Second Language program at Cambridge College in Lawrence.

The thrift shop, a fixture in North Andover since 1955, is an all-volunteer run and nonprofit operation. Besides funding the two annual scholarships, money earned at the Sutton Street shop is donated to other local nonprofit groups. The shop's inventory of clothing and household goods is donated by residents.
