The halls at North Andover Middle School were filled with sounds of cool tunes by the jazz band and the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking at the North Andover Middle School Parent Teacher Advisory Council-sponsored open house and ice cream social on Wednesday night, March 5.

The cookies, made by consumer and family science classes, and music, performed by the middle school's jazz band, choir, concert band and a capella choir, were part of the event planned to showcase the related arts curriculum at the middle school.

The open house is an annual event, celebrated as part of Middle School Week.

Art, health and wellness, world language and technology education classes had projects on display throughout the school that evening, which also featured a Scholastic book fair and ice cream sundaes served by PTAC members.

The event was a chance for parents and students to get together, socialize, mingle with teachers and school staff and see what students had been working on throughout the year, said Cheryl Means, PTAC copresident.

Means, who has a son at the middle school, described the evening as "a big success ... a nice night."

"The goal was for every student to be represented in some way that night, and I think we succeeded in that," she said. "It was a light-hearted and fun night, a way to see people and socialize, but also learn about the programs at the school."

Students, parents and teachers gathered for games of four-square in the gym, technical education classes demonstrated cars they'd built and families munched on pizza and ice cream.

Members from the cast of "Guys and Dolls," the students' spring musical, performed a few scenes for families and sold advance tickets for the show's April 10 through 13 run.
