More of veteran's flag plans unfurled
BOXFORD — A Guadalcanal veteran's plan to greet people entering Boxford with a big American flag is again gaining steam now that a half-dozen groups endorsed the concept and many of the details.
Frank Pomroy said the selectmen's decision to wait for the American Legion to approve his plan for the Village Green nearly stopped his fundraising effort. Later, the James L. Melvin Post pledged $500 toward the flagpole project at the park named for Melvin, which features the town's war monuments.
"I think it's like motherhood," said American Legion member Ed Bryant. "Who could be against it? It's just, where will you put it?"
Pomroy said he didn't care about where in the park to place the flagpole — which would stand perhaps 55 feet. Ultimately, it may replace a pole less than half its size in the center of Melvin Park, within the triangle formed by Main and Elm streets and Topsfield Road.

College forms panel to search for president
NORTH ANDOVER — The next leader of Merrimack College needs to keep the school attractive as the competition for students becomes stiffer, said Peter LaFond, president of the Friends of Merrimack College.
"I think it's extremely important," LaFond said of the college president's role.
The Catholic college has formed a search committee to find a replacement for President Richard Santagati, who is retiring after 14 years. The goal is to find someone by September.
The committee plans to gather input from the college community, review candidates and ultimately make a recommendation to the Prior Provincial of the Order of St. Augustine. After the Prior Provincial reviews the candidates, the decision is up to the Board of Trustees, the school said in a press release.
"The Board of Trustees is seeking a president whose academic and administrative accomplishments demonstrate the leadership, management, communication and fundraising abilities required to continue the college's role as the premier higher education institution of the Merrimack Valley," Laurence Demers, who chairs both the Board of Trustees and the search committee, said in the press release.
The president's role extends outside the approximately 2,000-student college and into the surrounding cities and towns.
