Pentucket sends personal packages to troops

The Pentucket Community Service Program's third Operation Pentucket Cares Troop Drive was "a resounding success," organizers say. Local businesses, students and parents collected and sent 1,065 pounds of personal supplies to U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The entire Pentucket community responded generously to the drive. Additionally, Gillette Co. donated personal items and Dr. David Reczek of Newburyport provided oral hygiene products to be included in the boxes.
The students from the elementary, middle and high schools collected personal items, wrote letters and prepared handmade note cards for the troops to use to send notes home.
Annemarie Smith was once again the lead organizer of the OPC Troop Drive. Her relentless hard work and great coordination made the night a success. Postmistress Laura Tyrrell and her team at the West Newbury post office coordinated the shipments and completion of customs forms. As always, their help was invaluable.
The coming together of students, families and businesses to send their "thanks" to the servicemen and women is an example of what the Pentucket Community Service Program is all about.
The Pentucket Community Service Program is an extracurricular program of the Pentucket Regional School District that receives no taxpayer funds or student fees.
The program receives financial support from the following community sponsors: TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation, the Community Connections Fund, Haverhill Rotary Club, Institution for Savings, Merrimack Valley Hospital, Georgetown Savings Bank, Merrimac Savings Bank, Pentucket Bank, Pentucket People's Foundation, the Pentucket Middle School PTO and anonymous individual donors.
Each year hundreds of Pentucket middle school and high school students, as well as parents and faculty, contribute thousands of hours of volunteer service to community organizations and projects. For more information, visit www.pentucketcommunityservice.com.
