Move over, Julie Andrews: Masco's 'Sound of Music' up for best musical in Spotlight Awards
Masconomet High School's production of "The Sound of Music" is in the running for best musical in North Shore Music Theatre's Spotlight Awards. The nomination was announced earlier this month.
Masco's production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ran Nov. 8 through 10.
North Shore Music Theatre hosts the Spotlight Awards each year to recognize the musical theater talents of local high schools. Dubbed "the Tony Awards for high school musicals," the theater company selects 24 high school productions from Massachusetts and New Hampshire for 15 different awards, including best leading and supporting actor/actress; best chorus/ensemble; best choreography; best scenic, costume or lighting design, and best overall musical.
The Masconomet cast will perform one song from "The Sound of Music" at the black-tie Spotlight Awards ceremony at NSMT on June 2, along with the other nine area high schools nominated for best musical — just as performers do at the Tonys.
At the ceremony, Masco actors will have a chance to sing with the NSMT house orchestra on the theater's main stage. Also, the evening's opening number will be performed by two students from each of the high schools in the running for Spotlight Awards, directed and choreographed by NSMT staff.
Masco's "Sound of Music" had a cast of more than 40 players, starring Nicole Soriano as Maria, and was directed by music teacher Jill Hasselbacher.
Three judges from NSMT have watched each of the musicals in the running for Spotlight Awards. Masco's "Sound of Music" was the first show they saw this year.
Hosts at the Spotlight Awards ceremony will be David Nathan Perlow and Addi McDaniel, best known to NSMT audiences as Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez from NSMT's 2007 production of Disney's "High School Musical." Other award presenters include local film and theater personalities and politicians.
