Lake Gardner to be the scene of family fun

The Town of Amesbury Youth Department and Health Department, in conjunction with the Lake Gardner Improvement Association, presents the Lake Gardner Family Fun Fest on June 30 during Amesbury Days.

The event features the third annual sandcastle contest, a sun safety fair and the sixth annual Milk Jug Derby boat race.

For the sandcastle contest, special sand is being brought in, and if last year's huge turnout and fantastic structures are any indication, this year should be even bigger than ever, organizers said.

In addition to this year's homemade boat race, a canoe and kayak race has been added. Build boats for speed or build them for fun, or just bring a canoe or kayak and compete for prizes in a short race across Lake Gardner and back.

The sandcastle building starts at 10 a.m., and the boats race at 11. Celebrity officials, including Mayor Thatcher Kezer, will judge the entries and prizes will be awarded at noon.

This family event will run from 10 a.m. until noon. Planned features include balloons, a clown, face painting and more. There is plenty of parking, and there are hiking and biking trails located nearby, as are many local shops and restaurants.

Preregistration is required for the Milk Jug Derby. For registration forms, more information and race details, visit www.lgia.org.
